A knee replacement in Mumbai costs between ₹1.6 lakh and ₹2.6 lakh for standard surgery, and ₹2.8 lakh to ₹5.5 lakh if a robot is used. That is per knee, as of September 2026. The difference is almost never the surgeon's skill. It is the implant, who gives your anaesthesia, what is used to keep the operation sterile, and who looks after you at two in the morning.
Prices compiled across 18 MyDocsy network centres in Mumbai and Pune, September 2026. Clinically reviewed by Dr. Cyrus Contractor, MS (Orthopaedics).
If you have collected two or three quotations, you have probably noticed they do not agree with each other, and that nobody has explained why. This page explains why. Not so you can find the cheapest one, but so you can tell which differences matter for you and which ones you are paying for without needing them.

What Does a Knee Replacement Cost in Mumbai?
There are four price bands in this city. They are not four prices for the same operation. They are four different packages that happen to share a name.
| Where it is done | Price for one knee | What you are getting |
|---|---|---|
| Small nursing home | ₹1.3–1.8 lakh | Basic implant, junior anaesthetist, reusable drapes, shared ward, a general duty doctor on night duty |
| Quality-screened mid-tier hospital | ₹2.2–2.6 lakh | Certified implant, senior anaesthetist, full single-use sterile setup, proper operation theatre air handling, three-day stay |
| Robotic surgery, mid-tier hospital | ₹2.8–4 lakh | Everything above, plus a robotic system that plans and guides the bone cuts |
| Robotic surgery, large hospital | ₹3.7–5.5 lakh | Everything above, plus an intensive care unit on site, every specialty in the building, and an orthopaedic doctor on the floor overnight |
📌 Key takeaway: The most important row is the second one (₹2.2–2.6 lakh). That is the level below which the things being cut back stop being about comfort and start being about patient safety.
What Is the Lowest Price You Should Say Yes To?
Around ₹2.2 to ₹2.3 lakh, at a hospital that has been checked properly.
Here is where that money goes:
- Roughly ₹75,000 pays for the implant itself.
- The remaining ₹1.45 to ₹1.55 lakh covers the hospital, the surgeon, the anaesthesia, everything used in theatre, your pre-operative tests, and a standard three-day stay.
Nursing homes can quote ₹1.6 to ₹1.8 lakh because their running costs are lower and they do not carry the same overheads. The operation they perform is a real operation. The package around it is not the same package, and that is the part worth understanding before you decide.
What Gets Left Out to Reach ₹1.3 or ₹1.5 Lakh?
Four things, mainly. None of them appear on your discharge summary, and none of them are visible to you afterwards. That is the actual problem — not the price.
- A junior anaesthetist instead of a senior one: A senior consultant anaesthetist costs the hospital ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 for your surgery. A junior doctor will do it for ₹4,000 to ₹5,000. For a healthy patient whose surgery goes smoothly, you will never know the difference. The difference exists for the fifteen minutes in your life when something unexpected happens, which is exactly when you would want the experienced person in the room.
- Cheaper draping: Draping sounds trivial. It is not. In a well-run knee replacement, your leg is covered in single-use sterile sheets and then sealed with a special adhesive film that sticks directly to the skin, so that the only skin exposed to the air in the theatre is the seven or eight centimetres where the surgeon is going to cut. Everything else is sealed off. Bacteria that live harmlessly on your skin cannot get anywhere near the joint. That full set-up costs about ₹13,000 per patient, all of it thrown away afterwards. The cheaper version uses cloth sheets that have been washed and reused.
Why this matters: If an artificial joint gets infected, treating it is long, difficult, and sometimes means removing the implant entirely.
- No powered wash of the bone: Before the implant is cemented in place, the surface of the bone should be flushed clean with a powered jet of fluid (pulse lavage), which clears out debris and lets the cement grip properly into the tiny pores of the bone. The machine that does this costs about ₹7,000 per case. The alternative is washing with a syringe, which does not reach the same way. Cement that grips better is an implant that stays put for longer.
- Who is there at night: In a large hospital, an orthopaedic doctor is on the floor overnight. In a smaller setup, one general duty doctor covers every patient in the building — the fevers, the chest pains, and you. If your dressing starts soaking through at 3am, the difference is whether someone who understands knee replacements looks at it now, or whether it waits until the morning round.
📌 Knee replacements have been done well in Mumbai at ₹1.3 lakh. Plenty of patients do fine. The reason we still set a floor is that you have no way to check which of these four things was reduced in your case, and nobody will tell you.
Why Does the Implant Alone Change the Price by ₹70,000?
A knee implant has three parts: a metal cap on the end of the thigh bone, a metal plate on top of the shin bone, and between them a hard plastic spacer that does the job your cartilage used to do. That plastic spacer is the part that slowly wears out over the years.
Indian-made implants start at around ₹60,000 and are perfectly appropriate for a lot of knees. Imported systems run from ₹75,000 to ₹1.3 lakh. Two things separate them:
- The plastic: Better systems use a plastic (highly cross-linked polyethylene) that has been specially treated to resist wear over decades rather than years. If you are having this done at 78, it matters less. At 56, it is the difference between one operation in your life and two.
- How finely it comes in different sizes: Premium systems make that plastic spacer in 1mm steps. Cheaper systems make it in 2 or 3mm steps. If the gap in your knee needs 10mm and the nearest available size is 13mm, the surgeon has to remove more bone to make it fit. That bone does not grow back. Nobody explains this to patients, and it is one of the few implant differences that has a physical consequence rather than a marketing one.

What About Robotic Surgery — Is It Worth ₹1 Lakh More?
Robotic surgery costs ₹2.8 to ₹5.5 lakh against ₹2.2 to ₹2.6 lakh for standard surgery. The robot does not perform your operation; your surgeon does. What it changes is how the cuts are planned and how precisely they are made, and it changes some things inside the operation that patients are never told about.
It is a genuinely interesting question with a real answer, and we have written it out properly here: Robotic knee replacement in Mumbai: what you actually get for the extra money.
Insurance: What "Cashless" Really Means
Most policies cover knee replacement. Very few patients pay nothing.
⚠️ The room rent trap: Say your policy allows ₹5,000 a day for the room and you take a ₹8,000 room because it is quieter or the family can stay. Many policies then reduce every other charge in the same proportion — the surgeon's fee, the theatre charge, the anaesthesia. A ₹3,000-a-day upgrade can become ₹40,000 or more on the final bill.
Then there are consumables that are excluded, a co-pay if your policy has one, and the fact that some policies treat the robotic part of the surgery as a separate item needing its own pre-approval.
Across our network, claims at mid-sized hospitals tend to settle with 20 to 30 per cent deducted. At large corporate hospitals, usually under 10 per cent. That is not because the big hospitals are kinder. It is because they bill in the format insurers expect and they employ people whose entire job is that conversation.
📌 Always check your policy against the specific hospital and the specific package before you choose — not on the morning of admission.
What Is Usually Not in the Quotation?
Ask about each of these in writing. They are the standard reasons a bill arrives bigger than the quote:
- Pre-operative clearance from a physician or cardiologist, and any tests that follow from it.
- Blood transfusions, if needed during or after surgery.
- Any hospital stay beyond the stated 3-day package.
- Physiotherapy after you go home.
- The walker, knee braces, and dressings you leave with.
- An implant upgrade decided during the operation.
- And the second knee, if the quote was only for one side.
When the Cheaper Hospital Is the Right Choice
Sometimes it is, and you will not read that on a hospital website.
If you are generally healthy, having your first knee replacement, with no heart or kidney problems and no severe deformity, then a properly screened mid-tier hospital at ₹2.2 to ₹2.6 lakh gives you the same operation as a large hospital at ₹4 lakh. What the extra ₹1.5 lakh buys is an intensive care unit downstairs, an orthopaedic doctor rather than a duty doctor at night, every specialty in one building, and physiotherapists who do nothing but joint replacements.
That is worth paying for if you have diabetes that is not well controlled, a heart condition, a previous surgery on the same knee, or if somebody has already flagged you as a higher-risk case. If none of that applies to you, the big hospital is a preference, not a medical requirement, and you should not be made to feel otherwise.
If Only One Side of Your Knee Is Worn Out
In roughly a fifth to a third of arthritic knees, only one side of the joint is damaged — usually the inner side, because that is the side that carries most of your weight.
In those knees there is an operation that resurfaces only the damaged part and leaves the rest of your knee, including your own ligaments, completely alone. The implant costs ₹60,000 to ₹95,000, and most patients are walking properly within a couple of days rather than three to four weeks.
Very few surgeons in Mumbai do this operation regularly, which is the main reason most patients are never told it exists. Read the full comparison here: Partial versus total knee replacement.
Five Things to Settle Before You Say Yes to a Quotation
- Is this for one knee or both? The most common misunderstanding, and the most expensive one.
- Which implant, and which plastic? Ask for the brand and the material grade in writing.
- Is full single-use draping and a powered bone wash included? If the answer is vague, that is your answer.
- What room category is this based on, and what does my policy allow? These two numbers need to match.
- What is excluded? Ask for the exclusions in writing rather than the inclusions. It is a far more revealing question.
If nobody has helped you answer these, you are not comparing quotations yet. You are comparing numbers that happen to be printed on similar letterheads.
